Scope note: Afección que ocurre como resultado de la exposición a un descenso rápido de la presión ambiental. Los gases, el nitrógeno en particular, escapan de la solución y forman burbujas en los líquidos del cuerpo y en la sangre. Estas burbujas de gas se acumulan en los espacios articulares y en la circulación periférica afectando a la oxigenación tisular y produciendo desorientación, dolor intenso y potencialmente la muerte.
